ITO Workplace Assessment Structures and Systems: Survey and Focus Group Findings

We are delighted to announce the release of the second key output from ITO Workplace Assessment Structures and Systems, a project supported through the National Project Fund. This report, by Karen Vaughan and Marie Cameron, describes survey findings from 33 ITOs and focus group results from 19 ITO staff and assessor representatives.
Results showed that ITOs often have trouble finding enough assessors with the right attributes and then supporting them. Various factors impact upon an assessor's suitability to the role and their performance, such as their motivations for becoming an assessor, organisational training policies and practices and moderation procedures.
Four key recommendations are made: to target investment in assessors tightly; to develop career pathways for assessors; to view assessment as part of an infrastructure for workplace development; and to address gaps in knowledge about assessment in the workplace.
The final stage of this project is to develop a good practice guide based on these findings, which will be available in April.
