Personal Observations of English Learning in a Refugee Classroom

The Central Hub of Ako Aotearoa has recently supported a Limited Sponsorship Opportunity project at English Language Partners Hutt. The report examines teaching approaches that work with learners who are refugees and have recently immigrated to New Zealand. Some of the learners come from traumatic backgrounds or circumstances and require sensitivity when being taught a new language.

The report is a personal reflection based on the experiences of teacher Tajinder Kaur who has over 15 years teaching experience. While teaching refugees, she has made keen observations and describes strategies for achieving the best results with these learners. The report recognises the difficult aspects of this specific environment, however her findings could be applied to many other teaching situations where diversity is a factor.
