Hei Tauira - Teaching and Learning for Success for Māori in Tertiary Settings

The Southern Hub was thrilled to host the launch of Hei Tauira Teaching and Learning for Success for Mäori in Tertiary Settings by the Hon Dr Pita Sharples in Christchurch on Friday 19 February. Approximately 100 people attended to congratulate and celebrate with the two University of Canterbury researchers Associate Professor Janinka Greenwood and Lynne-Harata Te Aika

The aim of the study was to investigate tauira, exemplars, of success for Mäori in tertiary education. The study focused on examples of success where much previous research about Mäori achievement in education, both tertiary and the school sector, had focused on the under-achievement of Mäori.

Through four case studies Janinka and Lynne-Harata identified five principles that contribute to this success. These principles will be of relevance not only to teachers of Māori learners but to all educators as they look to enhancing student learning.

  •  Toko ā iwi, toko ā wānanga – support of the institution and iwi
  • Tikanga – is seen as vital by iwi and Maori students as an indicator of the programme’s cultural integrity
  • Pūkenga – strong supportive leadership to create an environment conducive to Mäori success
  • Ako – the importance of developing effective teaching and learning strategies
  • Huakina – opening up the door with a proactive and strategic removal of barriers to study

In conjunction with the researchers, Ako Aotearoa has produced a 14 page Summary Document that highlights the main features of Hei Tauira Teaching and Learning for Success for Māori in Tertiary Settings, together with a one page summary.
