YOUR Symposium
“Turning Vision into Promising Practice”
|
|
Plans for the Symposium are coming together but to enable us to finalise a number of logistical issues we need your help.
Could you please let me (Helen) know, by a reply to this email or by sending to academy@akoaotearoa.ac.nz, answers to the following:
v Are you likely to attend the Symposium? (The 28th will be workshops (optional), with the symposium proper on the 29th and 30th. A full registration form will give travel options etc and will follow at a later date.)
v Would you like to participate in some of the sessions as part of a presenting group?
v What sort of session would you like to participate in?
v What would like to see in the programme?
v Would you rather listen to speakers or participate in activities and workshops?
v Is there some other way you would like to contribute to the Symposium or to the Academy? Photographer at symposium, MC for part of the programme, help with Academy admin, contribute to Limelight, write an article for the Education Review, mentor future applicants for TTEA Awards etc. etc.

Who has done what:
- Tracey Poutama-Mackie and Julia Bruce were both keynote speakers at the TASDEN event. The following is a report from the Ako Aotearoa Northern Hub about the presenters:
Two Academy awardees recently presented at the northern regional Hub inaugural forum of TASDEN (the Tertiary Academic Staff Developers’ Education Network).
Tracey Poutama-Mackie began with her own moving story of development and linked it to the themes for the day – supporting student diversity, collaborative teaching and literacy, which included her fascinating “Hide the veges in the stew” theory.
Julie Bruce showed how she practices what she preaches with video clips of her salon teams, great pics of her photo shoots, and set a task for everyone to do where they had to discuss collaborative learning opportunities that involve more than one of the organisations represented at the forum.
You can view Tracey’s and Julia’s presentations on the Academy website:
- Associate Professor Tracy Riley, from the College of Education’s School of Curriculum and Pedagogy, has been elected to the board of the Professional Association for Gifted Education. · The Academy’s 2009 Business Plan has been approved by the Ako Aotearoa Board and is available at: http://akoaotearoa.ac.nz/community/ako-aotearoa-academy-tertiary-teaching-excellence/resources/files/2009-business-plan.
One of the objectives in the Business Plan is the creation of a contestable fund open to Academy members to enable them to apply for funding for activities that will benefit the Academy. More information will follow on this but in the meantime you might like to think of projects for which funding could be requested. (Ako Aotearoa’s Research Manager will be available at the Symposium to explain about the Ako Aotearoa funding streams so now is the time to start thinking of possible projects for next year.)
If you have ideas about how we can complete any of the other objectives please let me know.

2009 Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards Round
As you will be aware nominations for the 2009 round have now closed and we look forward to a new group of winners joining the Academy. If you helped anyone complete their portfolio or application in any way can you please let me know. One of the KPI’s in our 2009 Business Plan is to mentor / assist new applicants and it would be great if we can show just how many people the academy has assisted.
Promotional Material
Very soon the first Academy promotional brochure will be available for distribution. A supply will automatically be sent to each member. If extras are required please let me know.
Remember:
A reminder that unless you have been asked to contribute by the Committee you do not have the authority to present or otherwise speak on behalf of the Academy. Any requests should come
through the committee c/o the Editor.
