When not busy teaching Welby is making films.  Welby writes here of his two latest achievements.

The short film MUNTED won Best Short Film in the Lucerne International Film Festival at the end of last year. It was selected in competition in a range of other major festivals including the 29th Brussels International Film Festival, the 53rd Bilbao International Film Festival, and the 27th Berlin Interfilm Short Film Festival. Munted also was a finalist in the 2011 New Zealand design awards picking up a medal for its innovative approach to visual narrative.

In the last month there have been a run of new requests for the film, significantly from the Vienna and Bermuda international film festivals. It iwill also screen in a number of smaller festivals in western Europe in the next three months.

The post-award trailer I have cut for the film can be seen here.

The Screenplay for my new Feature Film PUNCH has been awarded a special residency at the Maurits Binger Film Institute in Amsterdam. This is a prestigious award where an international panel selects five feature films in development from around the world for mentoring.

They have designed a special edition just for Punch because they recognised its distinctive nature. Accordingly I will be leaving for Holland on the 15th of this month to take up the 8 week residency. During this time I will be able to refine small details of the work before moving it towards production.

The time there will give me the chance to work with actors and a range of world class directors and establish a deeper substrate from which to bring the feature into being.

The cool thing is while I am over there Munted will be in a number of German festivals so I will finally get the chance to see it in context.
