Embedding of literacy and numeracy into blended and distance delivery programmes

marcd's picture

Otago Polytechnic has quite a number of EFTS in programmes at levels 1 - 4 that are delivered through information management systems such as Moodle. We are aware that a significant number of students in these programmes have weak literacy and numeracy skills and are therefore looking at means by which literacy and numeracy can be embedded into their learning.

I would be interested in talking to other practitioners who have the same or similar challenges.

The challenges of access

Open Polytechnic has been going through significant changes over the past twelve months, looking at the type and levvel of courses we offer.  Like Otago we deliver material to level 1-4 students using a learner management system (Moodle), along with paper-based course material.

Alot of our focus to date has been on correct structuring and signposting for text content and the use of more dynamic graphical and interact material for online delivery.

We are also looking at mentoring/ role modelling programmes to support learners through the initial stages of thier studies.  Celebrating the successes of past students, and using them to motivate and encourage new students into the online environment.  This gives past students an opportunity to "give back" and show new students how things work and where to find things they may need.
