LDNet - moving forward?

John Delany's picture

LDNet aims to provide ongoing support for learning designers through a community of experienced and beginning learning designers prepared to engage with each other. The community is this network of people, and LDNet is a tool that we can use to support ourselves and our work.

We are interested in your ideas about how best to use LDNet to make a difference. Please use this forum to share your thoughts.

update

We hope to have a get together at eFest of people (including current LDNet members) who would like to contribute their ideas on how the LDNet community might develop from here on – what are the needs and how should these be addressed?

Some discussion has taken place already and those with ideas may like to post them to this discussion.

The feeling is that LDNet has not established itself as a ‘self-sustaining community’. A self-sustaining community is a high ideal to aspire to, and while the resources on LDNet are getting plenty of use (well, hits at least!), the idea of a community around those resources has fizzled somewhat after the initial enthusiasm – won’t be the first and last instance of that as we all know!

A ‘community’ needs to have a purpose – something for its members to be passionate about – and to that end, Ako have suggested a slot at eFest be used as an opportunity for those involved in LDNet to develop a definite plan for a collaborative activity (probably with an eye to applying for Ako Aotearoa ‘collaborative funding’).

In the meantime the proposal to hold regional face-to-face meetings has been shelved.

But other ideas have been floated and are welcome to be shared here.... with a view to some f2f discussion at eFest.

Ok, some ideas then.. :-)

The original LDNet plan had the following focus for development:

·   learning design practitioners are supported across a variety of contexts
·   a network of experienced and less experienced learning designers is facilitated and established
·   expertise in the design of learning is shared and grown
·   the ongoing development and use of LDNet’s community of practice and learning design resources is promoted and supported to a level of sustainability
·   a range of experts and support people are actively engaged with LDNet

In working towards those outcomes we want to
·     Continue regular (monthly?) moderated online discussions focusing on specific topics and current issues in learning design
·     Continue regular LDNet newsletters by email and posted on the site
·     Continue to maintain, update the site resources and encourage their use
What else???
A series of regional face-to-face meetings to be held during terms 2-3 culminating in an LDNet workshop at eFest 2009 with a specific focus on ‘learning design’: the exact nature of the workshop would depend on the needs identified during the regional meetings?????

Regional meetings would provide opportunity for community building and networking at a local level while contributing to a national learning design community – LDNet. Participants would not be confined to existing LDNet members. Current LDNet members could be encouraged to use their local knowledge and contacts to bring potential new members to the meeting, with a particular focus on encouraging the participation of those new to learning design, and those involved in learning design in smaller organisations such as PTEs. In addition to the obvious benefits  for LDNet membership, as an outcome of regional meetings participants would be encouraged to attend eFest and become involved in the wider tertiary elearning network.

We want to know if this has support! What do you think?
