Tom Cochrane - teaching and learning case study - students’ oral presentation skills in Civil and Natural Resources Engineering

Tom is a senior lecturer in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering and has been teaching for four years. He noticed a number of problems surrounding the development of students’ oral presentation skills, not least the means for students to practice and get feedback on these, and the time demands on the teaching schedule taken up by student presentations. His response was to create a flexible learning resource to help – the Virtual-i Presenter. He was awarded a Teaching and Learning Development Grant to further develop and test it.

"The Virtual-i Presenter helps students prepare for when they actually have to create an oral presentation at work after they have graduated, and that’s the aim of this programme; to improve oral communication skills for whenever they have to present in front of an audience"
