infed (the informal education homepage and encyclopaedia of informal education) was established in 1995 at the YMCA George Williams College, London as an open and not-for-profit site. The aim is to provide a space for people to explore the theory and practice of informal education, social action and lifelong learning.

Content is organised around:
- ideas - key concepts and theories in informal education, lifelong learning and social action, eg social pedagogy or lifelong learning
- thinkers - exploring thinkers central to the development of the theory and practice of lifelong learning, social action and informal education, eg Steve Biko or John Dewey
- practice - developments in informal education and social action practice within different areas of work, eg community learning and development or groupwork
