Poster project update
Kia ora koutou - Southern Educational Developers 'poster project' update.
On the eve of Show Day in Canterbury (yaaaay!), I thought I'd let you know progress on what is officially titled the "Teaching adults poster and learning object project."
First the good news .... Bridget O'Regan has advised the SED group as follows:
"I am delighted to advise that the projects approval panel has met and that your application for Ako Aotearoa funding has been successful. The panel has some small recommendations and requirements, however these do not influence the funding. I will detail these in a formal letter."
So, what now? A few formalities first. a) The project needs to be signed off by the CPIT CEO before Ako Aotearoa can provide the funding. b) It needs the blessing of the academic research committee at CPIT before Neil Barns can sign it. c) I have applied approval to the Faculty of Health, Humanities and Science academic research committee, which has a meeting on 18 November. d) So, we hope to have it in the hands of Bridget by the last week of November if all goes to plan.
Meanwhile I'm off to Wgtn for the assessment symposium at Victoria Uni next Mon-Wed. 17-19 Nov.
How can you help? Prepare for PHASE 1. Do some digging! The formal research question for the project reads: "What are the core messages that educational developers agree underpin teaching and learning principles, which should appear on posters and electronic resources specifically designed to support the teaching of adult educators in Aotearoa New Zealand?"
We need to undertake a literature search to consider elements such as the significance of visual aids as a factor in effective learning environments, and the effect of unspoken visual messages supporting teaching and learning principles. Also, of course, we need to work towards some kind of consensus over key messages that underpin teaching and learning principles for adults. So, keep your eyes peeled for themes in current teaching and learning theory that may lead us to agree on the top 10 (-ish) messages.
We will use these messages to design a series of posters. These will be translated into electronic formats, e.g. PDF files, Flash-animated learning objects, which may be used in online or blended learning environments.
Also look out for any other posters that are already available to add to the mix.
Remember to contribute to this forum. Or start another of your own to move this project along ... and show that the SED means business!
cheers

Hi Gerard
Great news re the project funding. I will try to create some discussion with my colleagues the core mesages that underpin teaching and learning in a tertairy environment. A few of us at NMIT were involved in a workshop recently where we had an opportunity to thrash out our thoughts around teaching excellence.
