Transforming industry-led assessment of learning in the building and construction industries
Project Description
This research focuses on the on-job workplace learning assessment system and is an organisational level study. We want to learn about improving organisational capability – the system – in order to improve learning outcomes for trainees. The new BCITO assessment system – which removes responsibility for assessing from employers (also the trainers) and places it with regional Training Advisors with ITO professional development support – is designed in keeping with the four good practice principles from the previous Ako Aotearoa-funded research on ITO Assessment Structures and Systems (2009-2010). We will study these good practice principles in practice by observing assessment events and talking to people involved in on-job assessments - the “assessment team” of assessors, carpentry apprentices, moderators, and trainer/evaluators. By taking the previous study a step further, we, ITOs, and other tertiary providers and stakeholders can learn about both the process of assessment system change and the interim and likely learning outcomes from such a change.
