 | | Presentation by Ray Land at Waikato University | Professor Land asked attendees to consider recent evidence that demonstrates ways in which research-informed teaching environments within Universities can assist with fostering the high-level graduate attributes increasingly sought in a globalised economy. He explained how high-level graduate attributes can be achieved through utilising research, creative, scholarly and performance work to inform the curriculum. Ray argued that in a knowledge-based economy characterised by uncertainty, risk and speed, binary oppositions between ‘ivory towers’ and ‘real world’ environments appear increasingly outdated. Evidence suggests that the attributes valued by research communities, specifically problem-formulation and generation of ideas, are equally valued in business and industry, and further, are seen as contributing to good citizenship. The session included tools for framing and audit that can assist Universities with implementation of research-teaching linkages. It provided vignettes of effective practice and discussed the benefits of these approaches for organisations, disciplines and individual academic staff. | application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.presentationml.presentation | 996.45 KB |

 | | Global Intercultural Collaboration - Future Challenges and Opportunities | The workshop, which explored new directions in global collaborations between cultures, was held at AUT University 04th - 05th February 2010.
Participants were exposed to a diverse set of issues traversing many borders of culture, discipline and location. One central aspect of the workshop was the sustained focus on students and their learning, illuminated through different projects and different topics/subject areas.
Dr Tony Clear, friend and Debbie Corder in discussion
The time proved to be richly informing of practice across the interdisciplinary and cross cultural community who took part. It provided a wealth of ideas and tools for those who are wrestling with new challenges arising from an increasingly diverse student body, and devising strategies for developing tomorrow's gloabl professionals through innovative models for gloabal intercultural collaboration.
