This project aims to explore links between the learning about and playing of traditional Māori sports and games and development of communication, leadership, cultural identity/pride, self-esteem, problem solving and teamwork skills amongst Māori youth. Ki-O-Rahi is a Māori ball game, played on a circular field by teams of varying numbers. It is proposed that Ki-O-Rahi will provide an excellent medium for skills development as it provides an arena which is fun, challenging, is uniquely Māori, and requires learners to communicate, to take leadership roles and to work together to develop effective tactics.Methodology
This project takes a qualitative approach. Surveys, interviews and observations will be used to evaluate student behaviours such as communication, leadership, cultural identity/pride, self-esteem, problem solving and teamwork.Outputs
