Tailored workshop supports staff to redevelop processes of effective assessment for learning
Last year, over 50% of our professional development workshops were delivered in-house. This often involves Ako Aotearoa consulting with organisations to design and deliver events tailored to their individual requirements. Staff report this collaborative process facilitates relevant and innovative planning.
When the Skills Active industry training organisation faced a major review of its qualifications, it wanted this to include the associated assessment processes. Enter Michael Few, facilitator of the Ako Aotearoa PD workshop Effective assessment that supports learning, and an expert in assessment and evaluation. Michael Few, Instructor for New Zealand Defence College worked in collaboration with Leona van der Heyden, general manager of learning solutions at Skills Active, to tailor the existing workshop to respond to the changes brought about by the review.
The workshop focused on the use of new tools, which evaluate current assessment methods and develop more innovative assessments. This process included a review of core assessment concepts, a study of research-informed approaches to assessment, and the application of the acquired tools in planning new resources and activities.
Leona has reported back to Ako Aotearoa that the 12 staff participating in the session valued the chance, as a team, to do some blue sky thinking about the development of their assessments. She said the tools used during the workshop have now been embedded within the Industry Training Organisation’s (ITO’s) qualification review system and her team had acquired a greatly enhanced understanding of the learning development cycle.
Staff also said they liked the way the workshop was delivered. One commented:
“Michael had researched exhaustively, acknowledged and worked productively with staff expertise, was calm and approachable, and had a good balance of small group activities and teacher led time.”
Now that many other tertiary organisations are beginning to review their qualifications in the light of the TRoQ (Targeted Reviews of Qualifications) outcomes, Leona believes these organisations may also find a tailored workshop on this topic of great value to their staff.
