Lecturer finds problem-based learning workshop beneficial
Ako Aotearoa runs a full day experiential workshop Problem-based learning: Creating student-led activities for work-ready outcomes that explores the principles of problem-based learning and includes the opportunity to plan a relevant PBL activity for learners.
Dr Lukasz Swiatek is a lecturer, currently teaching third-year courses in the School of Communication, Journalism and Marketing at Massey University. He attended the workshop because he wanted to extend his knowledge of the principles for good design of these activities.
Although he was already including problem-based activities in his courses, Lukasz says the workshop gave him a solid theoretical framework from which to further refine his activities. He also valued knowing more about the different types of problems and their contexts.
A feature of the workshop is refining a problem-based activity, explaining it to other participants and gaining their useful feedback. Lukasz recently used his newly gained knowledge to design a problem-based activity focused on “leadership”. Students investigated leaders from recent news reports, categorised their leadership styles, and enacted these styles with their peers.
Lukasz reports the students were fully engaged and said they enjoyed the activity. He is certain that it was a productive way to achieve the learning outcomes.
Lukasz recommends this workshop to those who are new to this teaching method and also to those using problem-based learning who want to further develop their practice. He was complimentary about how Cath Fraser facilitated the workshop.
