Te Whaihanga – Preparing students to work with Māori
About the project
Students in planning, architecture,engineering and landscape need to learn why and how it is important to engage effectively with Māori. Built environment professionals effect change to the spaces and places in which communities live. Research to date has identified a dearth of relevant material and change has been slow as a result. Building on seed funding from the University of Auckland’s Te Whare Kura initiative, this project involves employers, professional institutes, community developers, Māori professional associations, key Māori staff in local authorities, students and staff, and looks to improve the way new entrants are taught.
This project aims are to:
- develop online video and supporting material for teaching and learning in the Planning, Architecture, Engineering and Landscape disciplines; and
- prepare student professionals, both Maori and non-Māori to capably work with Māori.
Design / Methodology
A mixed mode method will be used and the design of the project will be participative and inclusive involving both the collaborators and industry partners. We will make use of a range of information gathering approaches including: literature reviews, interviews, group discussions, and observations.
The vision of this project is to ensure that future generations of planners, architects and engineers are better prepared to work with Māori professionals, iwi representatives and community and papakāinga developers in their day-to-day work.
By the end of the 2 year project we will have created a set of learning materials, for use with built environment student professionals in the planning, architecture and engineering fields in particular. The materials will be available to share with the sector and will include:
- At least 4 x 5 minute videos illustrating common situations
- Resources that will enable staff to assess learning situations
- Resources to support students to reflect on their learning.
- Project officially launched March 2016
- Research assistants Vincent Malcolm Buchannan (Engineering) and Biddy Livesey (Planning) appointed
- Ethics approval granted for 2016 interviews and hui
- Ethics approval achieved to enable UoA to administer the learning assessment tool with students in the partner instituions AUT, UNITEC and Victoria using survey monkey
- Development of teaching and leanring materials
- International seminar by Dr. Janice Barry from University of Manitoba
- Presentations at the NZPI annual conference and Ngā Aho
Auckland Council is a financial partner in developing and producing the teaching resources. A number of staff with expertise in building Te Tiriti capability, Māori responsive and engagement in local government will be contributing to the outcomes of this project.
Goals for 2017-2018 include:
- The production of the 4 video clips by Takitini Productions
- Developing the teaching and learning training session
- Using the learning assessment survey monkey tool with students in all partner institutions
- Trialing the teaching and learning material

The attached videos have been produced as part of the Te Whaihanga project to better prepare built environment professionals to work with Māori. They have been produced in partnership with Auckland Council. They are designed to be used in a facilitated learning situation. The first of the training for trainers sessions will be held on February 20th 2018 in Auckland. This will be by invitation only.
