ePosts: An introduction to effective online teaching
About the project
A large proportion of our tertiary population are from the so-called “Net Generation’, and/or technology-rich and connected backgrounds: in schools, home and the workplace.
New Zealand providers are being urged to reconsider “existing modes and means of delivery, including new and emerging technologies” (Tertiary Education Strategy 2014-2019) to ensure a 21st Century pedagogy.
Most tertiary institutes will have some form of eLearning policy, and offer online or blended delivery options. Yet at the classroom level, many teachers struggle with implementing these changes, and understanding the requisite changes to practice.
Posts is envisaged as a ‘sister-resource’ to Signposts and Goalposts (previously published by Ako Aotearoa), i.e. a booklet style of 10 one-page “primers”, written in simple, accessible language, demystifying concepts, terminology and principles.
The goal is to produce, and pilot, an entry-level handbook for new tertiary teachers, and teachers new to eLearning, so they can introduce effective, proven strategies into their own classroom practice. A workshop, with multimedia resources, would also be developed.
The project aims to produce a ready-to-use and just-in-time resource for tertiary teachers who are making a start with using technology as part of their teaching and learning practice.
The resource will be based on current literature and published studies, to offer examples of good practice which are supported by evidence, and suggestions for where teachers can access further information and ideas for ongoing development.
A second aim is to develop a highly practicable professional learning development workshop which will extend this content with additional video clips and demonstrations.
We will begin with a literature review, looking at national and international research and good-practice guidelines, and including Ako Aotearoa publications.
The review will inform the titles and content of the central 10 pages in the booklet, which will be drafted and sent out for review across the sector, including through Ako Aotearoa mail lists.
We will also be inviting contributions of case studies, scenarios and examples and links/references for further reading, to include as appendices and add value to the resource, ensuring it offered both theory and practice contributions for readers.
Following review and re-drafting, the booklet will be formatted, then used in a pilot study by staff developers working in the three partner organisations.
We will collect anecdotal feedback from these staff developers about their, and the teachers they worked with, experiences.
This feedback about learner benefit will be included in the final report to Ako Aotearoa, and will inform the first of Ako Aotearoa’s post-project impact evaluations.
The primary objective of this project is to develop a resource for teachers, and for the staff developers who train and support them.
Teachers, particularly those new to their career, and those new to eTeaching, are therefore the primary group of learners most immediately impacted on by the development of this resource.
Measurements we hope to report on are likely to include shifts in student engagement, changes in delivery approaches, and differences in classroom dynamics and interactions.

A workshop lesson plan, based on the booklet but with additional video clips and multimedia resources, with enough options to tailor sessions to all tertiary sectors – universities, ITPs, wananga, ITOs and PTEs, which could become part of Ako’s professional development workshop series. Or Plan B - If Ako decided not to offer the workshop, the lesson plan and resources could be shared through the website for providers to download and run their own internal workshop training sessions.
