Dr Ocean Mercier - Ngāti Porou, Te Kawa a Māori Studies, Victoria University of Wellington
Ocean was the first Māori woman to graduate with a PhD in physics in 2002. Her thesis research used infra-red spectroscopy to explore the magneto-electronic behaviour of a recently discovered family of manganese oxides. She then completed two postdoctoral fellowships. Her current research explores how the combination of traditional or local knowledge and euro-science can be beneficial in educational and research contexts (check Te Whata Kura Ahupūngao for more info). She is also working with researchers at the University of Sydney and MacQuarie University on a comparative examination of Māori and Aboriginal academic experience.
