Mary has taught sociolinguistics and communication studies and trained teachers to work with adult ESOL-literacy students. She now works as a learning advisor and helps students tackle all aspects of their studies, including PhD planning, research and writing. Mary’s PhD is in sociolinguistics and investigates issues of language maintenance and shift in immigrant communities in New Zealand. Her current research interests include how to teach critical thinking and how university staff can provide effective feedback to students from diverse language backgrounds and cultures.
