Supporting adults with dyslexia in tertiary education and training: an introduction
Half-day workshop | $165 + GST
About the workshop
Recent research from a wide range of disciplines has significantly expanded our understanding of dyslexia and how best to support dyslexic trainees and students. In this introductory half day workshop, participants will have hands on exposure to the latest dyslexia screening tools. Facilitator Mike Styles, from the Primary ITO, will help throw some light on some of the additional challenges that trainees/students face beyond phonological decoding. The latest thinking on Positive Dyslexia will be covered and some of the new technological aids will be demonstrated. The focus is on providing holistic support for learners with dyslexia, both in the classroom and within the institution as a whole.
The workshop will be of interest to, and within the scope of managers, tutors and learning support staff across the sector who wish to take their first steps in developing their understanding and support for learners with dyslexia and other specific learning differences.
About the facilitator
Mike Styles is the National Literacy and Numeracy Advisor for the Primary ITO. The Primary ITO is doing a number of things to support dyslexic trainees in the primary sector. All trainees are offered the chance to be screened for dyslexia and training providers and employers are offered advice and guidance to support dyslexic trainees and employees. Mike is leading this work. He has attended two conferences in the United Kingdom and these workshops are a vehicle to share the knowledge and skills learned at those events. Mike has an extensive background in workplace and adult literacy and numeracy.
These workshops are part of Ako Aotearoa’s Professional Development Programme – an initiative to bring high quality, evidence-based and affordable professional development to educators and managers across New Zealand’s diverse tertiary education sector.
