Music in Early Childhood Education
Often we find that music in the early years centre can become very teacher led and dominated activity. Wheras drama, dance and art (works) lead the child to make new connections, in music this is often withdrawn through a desire to prevent disturbance of other activities in the room.
Finding the opportunity for children to continue to play with sounds and songs and allow their 'play' to become their 'music' (work) is the goal of the Changing Places project. With the inclusion of music students working alongside early childhood student teachers, the opportunity arises for each set of students to learn from each other. The early childhood student teachers, will see how to develop the opportunities for children to devise their own musical ideas. The music students, will learn how to work with others, in an emergent musical context. Anyone got anything to add?
