The debate on qualifications/accreditation for tertiary teachers in NZ has been ongoing since at least 1999. A similar lengthy process has characterised Australian higher education discussions on the quality of teaching, but neither country has implemented a national process for the professional recognition of tertiary teaching.
The recent Productivity Commission report on ‘new models of tertiary education’ contained recommendation 14.7—that NZ should develop frameworks of standards for tertiary teaching to recognise and reward capability, and that these should incorporate effective modes of teaching for Māori and Pacific students. It is now timely to take a good look at successful international models and consider how they might work in NZ.
The UK introduced their Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) and established the Higher Education Academy (HEA) in 2003 to provide an accreditation scheme for university teachers. There are now over 80,000 fellows of the HEA in the UK, with increasing numbers in Australia (800) and NZ (78), and further uptake in 80 countries across the world.
Alison Robinson-Canham will introduce the key features of the UK approach, examine some research on the effectiveness of standards frameworks, and answer questions from the audience. The aim is to raise awareness of this global model and promote debate on its applicability in NZ.
About the presenter:
Alison leads strategy for Accreditation, Fellowship, Excellence Awards, and development of the HEA’s professional learning policies in the UK and globally. She has a long-standing interest in professional recognition and enhancement initiatives and has worked on the development of the UK National Teaching Fellowship Scheme, the Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning initiative, and more recently the Collaborative Awards for Teaching Excellence and the Global Teaching Excellence Awards.
Professor Giselle Byrnes (AVC Research, Academic and Enterprise) at Massey University and Dr Stanley Frielick (Director, Ako Aotearoa) are co-hosts for the seminar. Massey is the first subscribing institution of the HEA in NZ, and Ako Aotearoa is supporting a trial of the HEA model at AUT and Unitec. Both Massey and Ako Aotearoa, along with AUT, are founding members of the HEA Australasian Strategic Advisory Board.
